Standing Up Against Stigma > Donald’s Story

My mental health journey has not always been at the forefront of my personal attention.

I went years with undiagnosed ADHD, depression, anxiety, and Substance Use Disorder. Self-medication became my modus operandi because I was living in opposition to my mental health concerns.

I became a survivor of sexual assault at the age of 18, which catapulted me into my first chasm of darkness and despair. I believe this is the same time that I began my relationship with drugs and alcohol. The following 18 years became a story of trouble and triumph.

As a young gay man, I found myself wrapped up in relationships that were not only devastatingly co-dependent, they were often abusive in every aspect you could imagine. At the age of 25, I found myself in a Domestic Violence shelter, addicted to multiple substances and terrified beyond all repair. This was the first time in my life that I was introduced to recovery. From that moment forward, my story became one of empowerment.

I have continued to struggle with all of the previously mentioned concerns, however, now I know that I am strong, resilient, and very capable of conquering any battle that presents itself along the way. Today, my mental health is a top priority. I have been provided resources and tools at every turn and am forever grateful to the community partners who have helped me along my journey.
