At a Glance:
Mental Health in Bartholomew County

With considerably fewer mental health providers per capita than the national average and higher rates of mental health issues like depression and suicide, we recognize the urgent need for adult and youth support in Bartholomew County.

Adults & Parents

Roughly one-third of adults in Bartholomew County experience prolonged periods of sadness and depression – a concerning statistic, especially because growing up with a parent who experiences depression or other mental health problems is considered an adverse childhood experience (ACE).

The more ACEs a child experiences, the more likely he or she is to struggle with health issues, academic performance, and substance use disorders later in life.

Youth

Mental health issues are the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people. Unfortunately, we've observed a significant uptick in depression, suicidal ideation, and other disorders among Bartholomew County youth in recent years. It is crucial that we safeguard the mental well-being of our young people, particularly those belonging to historically marginalized communities (which are at the highest risk of mental health difficulties).
