Standing Up Against Stigma > Freddie’s Story
Depression can sneak up on you.
In our society, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others, especially to those who seem to have what we desire.
I found myself entangled in this trap numerous times, particularly as I approached my 30th birthday in 2020. Then, in 2022, I felt unaccomplished and disheartened for not meeting some of the goals I had hoped to achieve by a certain time in my life – despite the education, experiences and opportunities I had accumulated over the years. I noticed that I was unhappier than usual, more lethargic, and increasingly prone to decline my friends’ invitations to go out. I began to question my life choices, wondering if I was on the right career path and if it was sustainable for achieving my long-term aspirations.
As I struggled with a lack of motivation for work and the activities that once brought me joy, my concern grew. When I caught a seasonal cold, I went to the doctor for a quick visit, during which she conducted a brief mental health screening. To my surprise, she noted some symptoms of mild depression and advised me to “keep an eye on that.” It was at that moment I realized that I needed to make some significant changes in my life to avoid falling into a darker place. Shortly after, I made some decisions in my life to help get me out of that cycle and I am grateful that I did.
